In order to navigate the seas, complete engineering projects along the shore, or to forecast weather events along the coast, it is necessary to know the depth of the water used to establish navigational charts, coastal land boundaries, and elevations for construction of coastal structures. A tidal datum identifies these water level elevations relative to a fixed point on land called a benchmark.
